How Do I Know If Online Therapy (Telehealth) is a Good Fit For Me?

Over the past 2 years, the popularity of telehealth has grown tremendously.  While telehealth can be really convenient, it’s not necessarily a fit for everyone. If you’ve been thinking about telehealth, we hope you’ll find this information helpful for deciding if it’s right for you.

Telehealth might be a good fit for you if:

  • You have a confidential space where you can participate in counseling services.

  • You have access to strong internet connection.

  • You have a phone or computer that you could use to meet online.

  • You have a super busy life that would make in-person counseling services really inconvenient or even impossible.

  • You have basic technology skills.

  • You live in an area where there is a shortage of mental health therapists.

  • You love the idea of getting the support you need from the comfort of home.

Contrary to what some people may believe, telehealth does not require you to have a lot of technology skills. Getting started is relatively easy, and your therapist will likely provide you with information prior to your first appointment to help you prepare.  You can take a look at the article that we share with people at LifeSpring to help them feel confident and prepared for their first session here. Nonetheless, we want to discuss the occasions when telehealth might not be a good fit for you.

Telehealth might not be a good fit for you if:

  • Your home environment is not a safe place.

  • You don’t have access to a place where you can speak freely without being overheard.

  • You don’t have a smart phone or computer that you can use for your appointment.

  • You feel uncomfortable with technology and don’t feel confident in knowing how to use it.

  • You don’t have access to secure internet.

  • You know that you have a hard time setting boundaries & eliminating distractions that would interrupt your sessions (ex. Children, text messages, work emails, phone calls, etc.)

Is telehealth a good fit for you?

Now that you’ve read a little bit about telehealth, what do you think? Is telehealth a good fit for you? At the end of the day, it’s important that you’re getting the support you need and that you’re choosing the option that feels like the best fit for you.  Something that is a great fit for one person might not be ideal for another.  Nonetheless, we hope you now have a better idea of your direction. One way or the other, we encourage you to take the step to sign up for therapy to get the support you need. We’re a little biased, but here at LifeSpring, we think therapy is awesome!
