Hello! My name is Sophie Koch (she/her/hers), and I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) in Maryland. I offer individual mental health counseling to adolescents (ages 15 and up) and adults.

I believe that life offers so many joys, opportunities, and adventures while also bringing pain, adversity, and complex life moments, which is how we can experience difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, less helpful behaviors, low self-esteem, and struggles with attachment.

Deciding to open up and trust another individual to share these difficulties with is an admirable decision, and I truly aim to serve as that trusted individual. We cannot have the sweet life moments without the difficult ones, and my goal for my work with clients is to help them openly embrace the difficulties so that we can appreciate the parts of life that make us feel alive.

I utilize mindfulness, attachment, self-compassion, multicultural, and creative approaches, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), and incorporate skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in my work. However, my predominant approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. ACT is heavily focused on embracing the world's joys and pains through acceptance, commitment to yourself, and being in touch with what matters to you. Regardless of the approach you are looking for, I aim to work with an individual client to determine what approach is best for them while maintaining my therapeutic philosophy of providing a warm, judgment-free, and empathetic environment. I also serve as an LGBTQUIA+ ally and as an ally for diverse populations as all parts of your identity are essential to this journey.

I believe counseling that incorporates a feeling of safety, freedom, and even a dash of humor or fun is a meaningful path to discovering and achieving your goals. My favorite part of being a counselor is bringing my quirky personality to connect with clients and help them reach their goals. This process can feel overwhelming, and it may be challenging to know where to start. Together, we can discover the path designed specifically for you. You are the driver and with your direction, I aim to serve as the GPS that helps get you where you want to go. You aren't alone. I can't wait to meet you

“Commitment isn’t about being perfect, always following through, or never going astray. Commitment means that when you (inevitably) stumble or get off track, you pick yourself up, find your bearings, and carry on in the direction you want to go.”

Outside of the office…

When I am not working, I am usually running around the city with my running team, spending time with friends, or cuddled up to my dog with the floppiest of ears, Jasper. I find that even out of the office, spending time connecting with people (and furry creatures) is still my main way of feeling most like myself. When I am not doing any of those things, I am probably exploring Baltimore, listening to an audiobook, or working on my next project, whatever that may look like!

Educational Background

I have a Master of Arts in Professional Clinical Counseling from La Salle University in North Philadelphia. I am a member of Chi Sigma Iota International Counseling Honor Society and a National Certified Counselor. My history includes working with adolescents and adult women with various mood, anxiety, and personality disorders of different backgrounds and identities.

In my Masters work, I trained under an ACT and DBT certified supervisor who mentored me in the core tenets of both practices. I have completed multiple trainings on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy along with Internal Family Systems. In my training, I prioritized specializing in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and worked to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy at the individual and group level to teach skills and process the trauma underneath the onset of BPD. I truly loved my internship experience and found it quite difficult to say goodbye to my clients so I am incredibly excited to begin at LifeSpring and begin working with you.

“We are in this stew together. We are caught in the same traps. With a small twist of fate, I could be sitting across from you, and you could be sitting across from me—both of us in opposite roles. Your problems are a special opportunity for you to learn and for me to learn. We are not cut from different cloths, but rather from the same cloth.”

— Steven C. Hayes, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: The Process and Practice of Mindful Change
